The Dunsandle area of County Galway in Ireland is famous for its 15th century castle near Athenry, but also held a steeplechase meeting on Saturday 17th August 1844 on a course described as a beautiful piece of level turf on the outskirts of the village. The local newspaper reported that ‘although the crowd lacked the gentry, it was made up of the stamina of the nation and was full to overflowing’. The main race was for a Saddle and Bridle, providing a good battle between Mr Linskey’s chosen and the best colt of Mr Sheriden. The former won the day, although there is no further record of a meeting being held in the future. |
